After much internal debate about the subject of my initial blog post (note how long it took me to actually post something), I have decided on a decidedly unoriginal topic: the future of journalism. Or more importantly, the future of journalism as it pertains to me.
This is a rather depressing topic. I'd rather just write about sports. Maybe that's not a lofty goal, but it's what I like to do. Not change the world, just write about sports. But, to continue to be able to write about sports, I guess I have to seriously examine what it takes to stay in this business.
Versatility.
That's what it takes now. That's what is being preached ad nauseum in our classes and in our readings. Well, I'll have you know that versatility is my middle name. If by versatile you mean:
Doesn't own a digital camera.
Had no experience with Dreamweaver until last week.
Doesn't own a video camera.
I'll stop with the list. It'll save myself some embarrassment. At least there's always a place for self deprecation in writing.
Reader(s) nodding in agreement.
My lack of versatility isn't equivalent to a lack of willingness to learn. It's just a little intimidating to know how much I don't know.
I had a lot more planned for this first blog, but I'm at work. And I've just been told I need to create a detailed explanation for how we code and format all our box scores because the Albuquerque Journal is implementing a new system (Adobe Indesign) to replace our antiquated old one. So I'll have to save the brilliant ending for another time. I've read some other blogs, and I think most of what I was going to say has been said in one form or another already anyway.
My lowly agate work awaits (I'd prefer if you called me designer of the Sports Today page though).
